Sample sales vs made-to-order: how our bridal Outlet works

“Outlet” and “wedding dress” aren’t words people expect in the same sentence, so let’s demystify it. Here’s exactly what an off-the-rail gown is, why the prices are so kind, and how to decide whether the outlet rail or a made-to-order gown is right for you.

First: what is a sample gown?

Every dress hanging in a bridal boutique is a sample, the gown brides try on in their appointments before ordering their own, made new in their size. Samples live a gentle life: tried on indoors, handled by stylists, steamed and checked between appointments. They never leave the boutique and they’ve certainly never seen a dance floor.

When a designer retires a collection, or we make room for new arrivals, those samples move to our outlet rail, professionally checked, beautifully kept, and priced to be loved a second time. That’s the entire secret. There’s no catch; there’s just a dress that has already done its job of making brides smile in the mirror, ready to make one bride smile down the aisle.

Made-to-order, for comparison

A made-to-order gown from our main collection is cut for you, in your size and your chosen colour, with a six-to-eight-month lead time. It’s the classic route, and for most brides with a year or more to plan, it’s the one we recommend, you get the full choice of colours, sizes and the newest collections.

So who is the outlet for?

Three brides, mostly. The bride on a shorter timeline, an outlet gown can go home with you within days, not months, leaving plenty of time for alterations. The bride with a sharper budget, outlet gowns are often hundreds of pounds below their original price, and the label inside is exactly the same Maggie Sottero or Justin Alexander it always was. And the bride who simply loves a one-off, because each outlet gown is the only one we have, in one size, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

“But will it fit?”

The most common worry, and the most fixable. Each outlet gown is in its sample size, but a skilled seamstress can usually adjust a gown by a size or so in either direction, sometimes more, depending on the construction. At your appointment we’ll clip the gown to show you exactly how it would sit once altered, and we’ll be honest with you about what is and isn’t achievable. We always are.

A few honest tips

Come with an open mind, the outlet rail rewards it more than any other rail in the boutique. Move quickly when you fall in love, because one-of-a-kind means exactly that; outlet gowns are first come, first served, and the lovely ones rarely wait long. And remember that outlet brides get the same private appointment, the same fitting suite and the same fuss as every other bride. The price tag changes; the experience doesn’t.
